Starburst Brainstorming

Starbursting is a form of brainstorming  that focuses on generating questions rather than answers. 
How to Use the Tool
The best way to see the power of this simple but effective technique is to think of a question, problem, challenge or issue to work on, and follow these steps:

Step 1
Download your chosen template to use for the activity or create your own starburst on paper.
  • The WORD version is editable so you can open it in a word-processing tool and write directly on the template.
  • The PDF can be printed out and written on.
Step 2
  • Write your topic or question in the middle of the star.
  • Then write the words "Who", "What", "Why," "Where," "When," and "How"  and "What if" at the tip of each point of the star.
Step 3
Brainstorm questions about the idea or topic, starting with each of these words. The questions radiate out from the central star. Don't try to answer any of the questions as you go along. Instead, concentrate on thinking up as many questions as you can.

Step 4
If needed, create a second layer of questions that 'burst' out from the first questions.
