Plagiarism

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?
Plagiarism is 'presenting the thoughts and works of others as your own'.
It is really important when doing assignments and writing research papers that you guard against plagiarism.  If you are using other people's work it is important that you reference it correctly.

It  is your responsibility as a student to ensure that you do not commit this breach of discipline whether intentionally or accidentally.
Forms of Plagiarism
1. Copying word for word, without acknowledging where the information came from.
2. Paraphrasing someone else’s words

3. Summarising someone else’s ideas without acknowledging the source.
This also applies to any images that are used whether they are from books or the internet.

How to avoid plagiarism

DO

  1. Acknowledge correctly the source of any quotations, paraphrases, summaries or other information.
  2. Place quotation marks around any information that is directly quoted from a source.
  3. Ensure that paraphrased information is accurate.
  4. Record the source of information as you
    are taking your notes.
  5. Develop your own writing style and voice.
  6. Find out what is the preferred Referencing Style used in your school and follow the protocols.
Adapted from: UC High School Kaleen Writing Handbook 2011

DO NOT

  1. Copy, buy, steal or borrow another person's work in part or in whole and present it as your own.
  2. Use material directly from books, websites etc without referencing to the source.
  3. Build on the ideas of another person without reference to the source.
  4. Submit work to which another person has contributed without acknowledging their contribution.
  5. Allow other students to use or copy your assessment material and information to complete their assessment tasks.
